Career Readiness: A College's Vital Role as a Champion of Students

Jill Kochheiser | Richmond Campus Director of Career Services

In today's job market, earning a college degree is only one component of achieving success, equally critical is equipping students with the preparation needed to transition seamlessly into a professional career. As the Career Services Director at Bryant & Stratton College's Richmond Campus, our team takes great pride in upholding our commitment to ensuring graduates are career ready and well-positioned for gainful employment. Career Services recognizes the pivotal role we play in shaping graduates who are prepared to excel in their chosen fields.

Lifelong Learning

First and foremost, a college should cultivate an environment that enables students to acquire knowledge, critical thinking skills, and discipline for lifelong learning—foundations essential for success in any career. For over 170 years, Bryant & Stratton College, a private non-profit career institution, has been dedicated to fostering intellectual curiosity and innovation, empowering students across a diverse range of programs. Lifelong learning contributes to this legacy of academic excellence and career-focused education.

Internships

Bryant & Stratton College emphasizes preparing career-ready graduates through its robust internship program. This program provides students with hands on experience, enhancing their resumes and equipping them with the practical skills needed for the workforce. Exposure to real-world scenarios builds confidence and competencies essential for long-term career success.

The Career Services team collaborates closely with employer partners in the Metro-Richmond business community to connect students with training and development opportunities in their respective fields of study. Establishing internship opportunities within the local community also strengthens relationships with employers who may later hire our graduates. This approach helps organizations recruit individuals trained to navigate challenges, develop leadership strategies, and demonstrate strong communication skills—attributes critical for career readiness.

Career Readiness

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, "Career Readiness is a foundation from which to demonstrate requisite core competencies that broadly prepare the college educated for success in the workplace and lifelong career management." Employers are seeking candidates who not only excel in their specific fields but also demonstrate a range of essential career readiness competencies. Career Readiness includes competencies such as Communication, Critical Thinking, Leadership, and Professionalism to name a few. Career readiness is essential for Bryant & Stratton College students as career development and leadership courses are built into the curriculum equipping them with skills needed to succeed in a competitive job market. It also ensures they can transition smoothly from college to career by providing real-world knowledge and practical experience.

Champion of Students

In conclusion, Bryant & Stratton College serves as more than a degree-granting institution—it is a catalyst for career readiness and a champion of students. By offering a strong academic foundation, hands-on practical experiences, and dedicated career guidance, the college prepares students to excel in an ever-changing professional environment. Understanding the importance of this mission, educational institutions must continuously refine and enhance their strategies to prepare students for successful and fulfilling careers after graduation.
